I shot this while walking along Market Street in SF. I came upon this sideways letter “T”. It appeared to be a cut out opening to gain access to pipe covers at a construction site. For me it’s a crude but clever version of form and function. Product designers, “Look Out!” (Designer unknown)

I was on my way to get a bowl of ramen on Sawtelle Bl. in West LA. Abandoned on the sidewalk was a couch that was left by a considerate citizen for all of us passing by to enjoy or bump into. In this case, I was happy to see it because it brought back memories of my own couch during my school years with the same ghostly impressions of two missing cushions. What luck. (Designer unknown)

I really like walking around SF’s Chinatown. There’s a wealth of things to see, eat, smell, and buy. In this case study, I came upon the entrance to a business. Don’t ask me what was inside the store because as you read the instructions on the doors, I would have a difficult time getting in. Push or pull? Designers, you need to “Make up your mind!” (Designer unknown)

What can I do with just two lines? Sometimes a good starting point for me is to start with a simple question and see what happens. As you can see, I can be partial to repetitious marks and patterns. One of the joys of my iPad is that I can explore on demand easily. At least when I’m not overly distracted by outside stuff because multitasking is a skill set that still evades me. Anyway, drawing digitally or on paper requires full concentration!

Every once in awhile, I’ll post images in a non-chronological order and pulled from my library of digital photos.  Their title dates will be the day I’ve pulled them from my library.  Anyway, snapshots are a valuable resource for my work.  That’s why I’ve decided to include these in my blog.  They will be things that I’ve shot that have caught my attention and are usually unstaged. Sometimes they will make their way straight into the work that I do digitally or by hand. As you may already know, my handmade work can be seen at my site richardosaka.com.

Looking around for stuff to draw, I found my mom's cooking book and a child rearing manual. Both have been great resources but not in the context shown here!

More books from the shelf. No truncated titles, just a fun and somewhat random selection from my library.

Explosions, bursts, or fireworks superimposed over three characters. A nice aspect of drawing on the iPad is that you can revisit previous drawings and also replay each brushstroke and view it in an animated mode.
